Scottish Waste Compliance: SEPA and Special Waste
IT disposal in Scotland follows different rules from England, and getting them right protects your organisation. In Scotland, hazardous waste is called special waste. It is regulated under the Special Waste Regulations 1996 and overseen by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). This is what applies to your Edinburgh business:
- You do not need to register as a special waste producer in Scotland, so there is no 500kg registration rule to worry about.
- Every movement of special waste, such as CRT monitors and UPS or laptop batteries, must travel on a Special Waste Consignment Note (SWCN) carrying a unique SEPA-issued code.
- Collections usually also require pre-notification to SEPA before the waste moves.
- Records must be kept for at least three years.
We prepare and manage the consignment note, the SEPA code and the pre-notification for your collection, so your Edinburgh site stays compliant without the admin.

Data Destruction for Edinburgh Banks, Insurers and Fund Managers
Financial firms in the Exchange District and at Edinburgh Park hold client portfolios, transaction records and regulated customer data on every laptop and server, and a formatted drive can still be read. Under UK GDPR the responsibility for that data stays with your organisation until it is provably destroyed. Computer Waste Recycling erases each drive to a recognised standard (NIST 800-88 / NCSC guidance) or physically shreds it, and every data-bearing device is matched to its serial number on your Certificate of Destruction. That gives your compliance and internal audit teams a clear record from your site to final processing, alongside the SEPA paperwork for any special waste. For the legal detail, see our data destruction page.
How an Edinburgh Collection Works
1. Tell Us What You Have and Where
Call or send us a list with your postcode. Mention any CRT monitors, UPS units or batteries, and any building access rules such as loading bays or security sign-in.
2. We Handle the SEPA Paperwork
Where special waste is involved, we prepare the consignment note and any pre-notification before the collection.
3. We Collect and Log Every Item
Our tracked, unmarked vehicles collect from your site, and every item is counted and recorded under a documented chain of custody.
4. You Receive the Paperwork
Data is destroyed first. Usable equipment is refurbished and the rest is recycled with nothing sent to landfill. You receive certificates, an asset report and your SEPA and waste documentation.

Computer Recycling in Edinburgh: FAQs
Do I need to register with SEPA to recycle old computers?
No. Businesses in Scotland do not register as special waste producers. Each collection of special waste, such as CRT monitors or batteries, needs a consignment note with a SEPA code and usually pre-notification, which we take care of for you.
Is computer recycling free in Edinburgh?
For most business collections, yes. It depends on how much equipment you have, what it is and its condition, and equipment with resale value may earn a rebate. Send us a list and we’ll confirm the cost before anything is booked.
Do you work with banks, insurers and fund managers?
Yes. We support regulated financial firms with serial-matched certificates, a full asset list and optional witnessed destruction, so your records are ready for audit.
Can you collect from Edinburgh Park and the Exchange District?
Yes. Both are among the areas we cover. Tell us about loading bays, goods lift booking and security sign-in when you book, and we’ll plan around your building’s rules.
Can you collect from the BioQuarter and university sites?
Yes. We collect lab and research workstations alongside standard IT, and every drive is destroyed and certified against its serial number.
Which areas around Edinburgh do you cover?
All EH postcodes, plus Livingston, Musselburgh, Dalkeith, Queensferry, Penicuik, Falkirk and Fife, and every other mainland UK location. For Glasgow and the west, see our Glasgow page.
