Computer Recycling Manchester
Free, certified computer recycling for businesses across Greater Manchester, with secure data destruction, per-item certificates, and nothing sent to landfill.
Manchester is the UK’s largest business centre outside London, and its offices, studios, labs and distribution sites retire an enormous amount of technology every year. Computer Waste Recycling (CWR) collects it for free, destroys every trace of data to certified standards, and recycles or refurbishes what’s left with a genuine zero-to-landfill outcome.
We work across all ten Greater Manchester boroughs, from Spinningfields and NOMA to MediaCityUK, Trafford Park and Airport City. There is no minimum collection size, and we can even retrieve laptops from hybrid and home-based staff.

Collections Across All Ten Greater Manchester Boroughs
We don’t just cover the city centre. Our collection teams work right across the conurbation, arriving in tracked, unmarked vehicles with a documented chain of custody from pickup to processing.
Manchester business districts we cover:
City Centre & Spinningfields (M1, M2, M3) · NOMA & Ancoats · Oxford Road Corridor & Manchester Science Park · Piccadilly & Mayfield · Airport City & Manchester Airport (M90) · Cheetham Hill · Openshaw · Wythenshawe
Greater Manchester boroughs we serve:
Salford & MediaCityUK · Trafford & Trafford Park · Stockport & the Stockport Exchange · Oldham · Bury · Rochdale · Bolton · Tameside · Wigan
Wider North West coverage:
All M, SK, OL, BL, WN and WA postcodes across Greater Manchester, plus Warrington, Cheshire and Lancashire, along the M60, M62, M56 and M61 corridors, and every other mainland UK location.
Hybrid & Remote Worker Device Retrieval
Since Manchester’s professional, tech and media employers moved to hybrid working, a large share of company laptops now live in people’s homes. When staff leave or equipment is refreshed, those devices are easy to lose track of, and every one is a data risk sitting outside your building.
We close that gap:
- Collection from home addresses across Greater Manchester and the North West
- Courier return options for staff based further afield
- Devices logged individually against your asset register as they arrive
- Certified wipe or destruction for every returned laptop, with a certificate per device
- Consolidated reporting so you can see exactly which devices came back and which are still outstanding
It turns a scattered, hard-to-audit problem into one controlled, documented process.

Certified Data Destruction in Manchester
Deleting files or reformatting a drive doesn’t remove the data, and recovery is often trivial. Under UK GDPR, that data stays your responsibility until it is provably destroyed, so destruction sits at the centre of every job we do.
Every Manchester collection includes:
- Certified erasure to recognised standards (NIST 800-88 / NCSC guidance), or physical shredding where a drive must be destroyed outright
- A serial-matched certificate of destruction for every data-bearing device, not one generic certificate per job
- An unbroken chain of custody from your premises to final processing
- Waste transfer and asset documentation for your compliance file
The result is a complete, defensible record you can hand straight to an auditor.

Compliance | Why Proper IT Disposal Matters in Manchester
The financial and reputational risk of poor disposal sits with your organisation, not the recycler you hired.
- UK GDPR breaches can attract fines of up to £17.5 million or 4% of global turnover, and dumping data-bearing devices is a recognised breach.
- The WEEE Directive imposes a legal duty of care on businesses to recycle electronics through authorised routes.
- The ICO has previously issued six-figure penalties over IT disposed of without secure data destruction.
CWR is Environment Agency registered (Waste Carrier Registration CBDU457512) and ICO registered, keeping your Manchester business compliant with both data-protection and environmental law, with evidence to prove it.
How It Works | From Booking to Certificate
- Tell us what you have. Book online or call with a rough equipment list, your site or sites, and any home-based devices.
- We collect securely. Tracked, unmarked vehicles arrive under a documented chain of custody.
- We audit & log. Every item is counted and recorded at serial level for your report.
- We destroy the data. Certified wipe or physical destruction to compliance standards.
- You get the paperwork. Certificates, asset registers and waste documentation covering the whole job.

Free Computer Recycling in Manchester | Do You Qualify?
Most commercial collections across Greater Manchester are free, and unlike many providers we set no minimum quantity. Whether a collection is free depends on the quantity, type and condition of your equipment and your location. Where your redundant IT holds resale value, we may even pay you a rebate towards new kit. If a job won’t cover our costs, we’ll quote clearly and upfront before anything is booked.

Common Questions About Recycling Old Computers
How do I dispose of an old PC?
For a business, the correct route is to use a licensed waste carrier who erases or destroys the data, recycles the hardware under the WEEE Directive, and issues you a certificate of destruction and waste transfer documentation. Deleting files, reformatting, or putting a PC in general waste does not meet your legal duty of care, and the responsibility for any data left on the machine stays with your organisation. We handle the whole process, including collection, from anywhere in Greater Manchester.
Can I throw a broken laptop in the bin?
No. Laptops are classed as waste electrical and electronic equipment, and their batteries make them hazardous waste, so they must not go into general waste or a skip. Businesses have a legal duty of care to use an authorised carrier and keep the paperwork. Being broken makes no difference to the rules, and it makes no difference to us either: we accept non-working equipment with no resale value.
Will a high street retailer recycle my old PC?
Retailer takeback schemes are designed for households, not organisations. They typically accept a small number of items, and crucially they do not provide certified data destruction, per-device certificates or the waste documentation a business needs for GDPR and WEEE compliance. For any business device that has held company or customer data, a certified IT disposal service is the appropriate route.
Is it enough to remove the hard drive before recycling a computer?
No. Removing a drive takes it out of the machine but does nothing to destroy the data on it, so you still hold a data-bearing device that must be wiped or physically destroyed and certified. Modern machines can also retain data elsewhere, including soldered storage in thin laptops, SSD cache, and the memory inside printers and multifunction devices. The safest approach is to have every data-bearing component identified, destroyed and certified.
Does deleting files or formatting a drive remove the data?
No. Deleting and formatting only remove the pointers to the data, and widely available software can recover it. Certified erasure overwrites the data to a recognised standard such as NIST 800-88, and physical shredding destroys the drive outright. Either way you should receive a certificate that identifies the device by serial number.
Frequently Asked Questions | Computer Recycling Manchester
Is there a minimum number of items for collection in Manchester?
No. We have no minimum quantity, which sets us apart from providers that require ten or more items before they will collect. Small clear-outs and full site decommissions are both welcome.
Can you collect laptops from home-based staff in Greater Manchester?
Yes. We can collect company devices directly from employees’ home addresses across the region, or arrange courier returns for staff further afield, logging and certifying each device individually.
Which areas of Greater Manchester do you cover?
All ten boroughs, including Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Oldham, Bury, Rochdale, Bolton, Tameside and Wigan, across M, SK, OL, BL and WN postcodes, plus the wider North West and every other mainland UK location.
How quickly can you collect in Manchester?
Quickly, and around your working hours. Give us your postcode and preferred date and we’ll confirm the earliest available slot across Greater Manchester.
What happens to equipment after collection?
Data is destroyed first. Usable equipment is refurbished for reuse, and everything else is dismantled for material recovery, achieving a zero-to-landfill result, fully documented.
