Campus and Education IT Disposal in Newcastle

Newcastle has an unusually large education and research sector for its size, and campus IT throws up problems an ordinary office collection never does. Devices are spread across faculties, halls and libraries. Some hold research data, some hold student records, and refreshes tend to land in the summer window when everything must happen at once.

We’re set up for that:

  • Phased summer refreshes, scheduled around term dates and building access
  • Collections from multiple faculties, departments and sites under one booking
  • Research and lab equipment handled alongside standard desktops and laptops
  • Student and staff records protected, with every data-bearing device erased or destroyed and certified
  • Consolidated reporting for finance and estates teams, with one asset register rather than a dozen
  • Reuse prioritised, which helps with sustainability reporting and keeps usable kit in circulation

The same approach works for colleges, multi-academy trusts and training providers across Tyneside.

Certified erasure or physical destruction of every data-bearing device, recorded item by item.

Hard drive shredding

Physical shredding of hard drives and solid state drives when a device must never be recoverable.

On-site destruction

Drives destroyed at your premises so your team can witness it, with the rest of the equipment collected in the same visit.

Server room decommissioning

IT asset management and audits

Itemised asset registers, serial number reporting and reconciliation to keep your records ready for audit.

Certified Data Destruction You Can Evidence

Deleting a file or reformatting a drive doesn’t actually remove anything, and recovery software is freely available. Under UK GDPR the responsibility for that data stays with your organisation until it’s provably destroyed, which is why we treat destruction as the heart of the job rather than an afterthought.

Every collection in Newcastle includes:

  • Certified erasure to recognised standards (NIST 800-88 / NCSC guidance), or physical shredding where a drive must be destroyed outright
  • A certificate of destruction for each data-bearing device, matched to its serial number, rather than one generic certificate for the whole load
  • An unbroken chain of custody from your premises through to final processing
  • Waste transfer documentation and an asset report for your compliance file

Hand that to an auditor and the conversation is over in a minute.

Hazardous WEEE | What Actually Applies in England

Some IT counts as hazardous waste, including CRT monitors and anything with a battery, such as laptops and UPS units. There’s a fair amount of out-of-date advice floating about, so here’s where things genuinely stand:

  • Businesses in England stopped registering as hazardous waste producers on 1 April 2016. If a provider tells you the rule changed in 2025, or quotes a 500kg registration threshold, they’re working from old information.
  • A hazardous waste consignment note is still required for every movement of qualifying items.
  • Records must be kept for at least three years.
  • Hazardous waste may only be moved by a licensed waste carrier, which we are.

We prepare and manage all of this paperwork for you, so compliance doesn’t land on your desk.

Getting It Wrong Is Expensive

The risk of poor disposal sits with your organisation, not with whoever drove the van away.

  • UK GDPR breaches can attract fines of up to £17.5 million or 4% of global turnover, and abandoning data-bearing devices is a recognised breach.
  • The WEEE Directive places a legal duty of care on businesses to recycle electronics through authorised routes.
  • The ICO has previously issued six-figure penalties where IT was disposed of without secure data destruction.

Computer Waste Recycling is Environment Agency registered (Waste Carrier Registration CBDU457512) and ICO registered, so you stay on the right side of both data protection and environmental law, with the paperwork to show for it.

  3. We collect and log. Tracked, unmarked vehicles, documented chain of custody, every item recorded.

  • Public sector and government: council departments, agencies and large administrative estates

Is Your Newcastle Collection Free?

For most organisations, yes. There’s no minimum quantity and no requirement for equipment to be working. Whether a collection is free comes down to the volume, type and condition of the kit and where you are. If your redundant IT still holds resale value, we may pay you a rebate towards new hardware. And if a job genuinely won’t cover our costs, we’ll tell you straight and quote before anything is booked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum number of items for collection in Newcastle?

No. We’ll collect a handful of devices just as happily as a full site clearance, which sets us apart from providers that won’t attend for fewer than ten PC-sized items. Tell us what you have and we’ll arrange it.

Can you destroy hard drives at our own premises?

Yes. We can destroy drives and SSDs on site in Newcastle so your team can witness it, then take the remaining equipment away for secure recycling in the same visit, with a certificate issued for every device.

Do I still need to register as a hazardous waste producer in England?

No. That requirement was removed on 1 April 2016, so you don’t register and there’s no 500kg threshold to worry about. You do still need a hazardous waste consignment note for qualifying items, records kept for three years, and a licensed carrier. We handle all of it.

Which areas around Newcastle do you cover?

All NE postcodes plus the wider North East, including Gateshead, Wallsend, North and South Shields, Sunderland, Washington, Durham, Cramlington, Blyth, Morpeth and Hexham, along with every other mainland UK location.

Can you work around university term dates?

Yes. Summer and half-term windows are when most campus refreshes happen, so we plan phased collections around building access, term dates and your own deployment schedule.

Does deleting files or reformatting a drive remove the data?

No. Both only remove the pointers to the data, and it can be recovered with freely available software. Certified erasure overwrites the data to a recognised standard, while shredding destroys the drive outright. Either way you should receive a certificate identifying the device by serial number.

What happens to our equipment after collection?

Data is destroyed first. Anything with life left in it is refurbished for reuse, and the rest is dismantled so materials can be recovered, giving a zero-to-landfill outcome that’s fully documented.
