CWR

Computer Recycling Nationwide

Free, certified computer recycling for businesses anywhere in the UK, with secure data destruction, one point of contact, and nothing sent to landfill.

Computer Waste Recycling (CWR) collects redundant IT from single offices and national estates alike. Wherever your sites are, we come to you, destroy every trace of data to certified standards, and recycle or refurbish what remains, returning the documentation your compliance team needs.

For organisations spread across the country, that matters more than a postcode. You get one account, one schedule and one consolidated report, instead of chasing a different local supplier in every region.

  • ✅ One point of contact for every site, however many you have
  • ✅ ISO 27001 certified data destruction with a per-item certificate

National Programmes for Multi-Site Organisations

Running IT disposal across a national estate usually means several suppliers, inconsistent paperwork and no clear picture of what was destroyed where. We replace that with a single managed programme.

  • One point of contact for every site, region and collection
  • A single schedule covering head office, branches, depots and home-based staff
  • Consistent process everywhere, so a laptop in Glasgow is handled exactly like one in Southampton
  • Consolidated reporting, with one asset register and one set of certificates across the estate
  • Rollout and refresh support, including phased collections timed around deployment of new hardware
  • Recurring collections where equipment builds up gradually across many locations

Whether it’s twenty offices or two hundred sites, you get one accountable team and one audit trail.

Waste Rules Differ Across the UK: What National Businesses Need to Know

Many national organisations assume IT disposal law is identical everywhere in the UK. It isn’t. Four regulators apply different rules, and getting it wrong in one region can undermine compliance across the whole estate.

England: Environment Agency

Businesses in England no longer register as hazardous waste producers. That requirement, and the often-quoted 500kg threshold, was abolished on 1 April 2016. A hazardous waste consignment note is still required for every movement, and records must be kept.

Wales: Natural Resources Wales

Wales did not follow England. Premises in Wales that produce, hold or remove more than 500kg of hazardous waste in any twelve months must still register with Natural Resources Wales, renew that registration, and pay a fee per premises. The registration produces a premises code that forms the first six characters of your consignment note code.

Scotland: SEPA

Scotland uses different terminology and legislation. Hazardous waste is called special waste, governed by the Special Waste Regulations 1996 and overseen by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. There is no producer registration, but movements need a SEPA-coded special waste consignment note and, usually, pre-notification.

Northern Ireland: NIEA

Northern Ireland operates under its own Hazardous Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005, regulated by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, with its own consignment note requirements.

We handle the correct documentation for each nation automatically, so your estate stays compliant wherever a collection takes place.

Our Nationwide IT Recycling & Disposal Services

Computer & Laptop Recycling

Full collection and recycling of desktops, laptops and peripherals, working or not, with value recovered wherever equipment still has life left in it.

Secure Data Destruction

Certified erasure or physical destruction of every data-bearing device, documented per item, applied identically at every site.

Hard Drive Shredding

On-site or off-site physical shredding of hard drives and SSDs when destruction beyond recovery is required.

Multi-Site & National Rollouts

Programme-managed collections across an entire estate, with phasing, scheduling and one consolidated report.

Data Centre & Server Room Decommissioning

Coordinated clearance of racks, halls and comms rooms anywhere in the UK, with asset logging and certified destruction throughout.

IT Asset Management (ITAM) & Audits

Itemised asset registers, serial number reporting and reconciliation across every location you operate.

Certified Data Destruction, Applied the Same Way Everywhere

Deleting files or reformatting a drive doesn’t remove the data, and recovery is often trivial. Under UK GDPR, that data stays your responsibility until it is provably destroyed, no matter which site it came from.

Every collection, anywhere in the UK, includes:

  • Certified erasure to recognised standards (NIST 800-88 / NCSC guidance), or physical shredding where a drive must be destroyed outright
  • A serial-matched certificate of destruction for every data-bearing device, not one generic certificate per job
  • An unbroken chain of custody from your premises to final processing
  • Waste transfer documentation appropriate to the nation the collection took place in

The result is one consistent, defensible record across your entire estate.

Compliance: Why Proper IT Disposal Matters

The financial and reputational risk of poor disposal sits with your organisation, not the recycler you hired, and it multiplies across a national estate.

  • UK GDPR breaches can attract fines of up to £17.5 million or 4% of global turnover, and dumping data-bearing devices is a recognised breach.
  • The WEEE Directive imposes a legal duty of care on businesses to recycle electronics through authorised routes.
  • The ICO has previously issued six-figure penalties over IT disposed of without secure data destruction.

CWR is Environment Agency registered (Waste Carrier Registration CBDU457512) and ICO registered, with the documentation to evidence compliance at every site.

How It Works: From Booking to Certificate

  1. Tell us about your estate. Book online or call with your sites, rough equipment volumes and any deadlines.
  2. We build the programme. One schedule covering every location, phased around your operations.
  3. We collect & log. Tracked, unmarked vehicles arrive under a documented chain of custody, and every item is recorded at serial level.
  4. We destroy the data. Certified wipe or physical destruction to the same standard everywhere.
  5. You get one report. Consolidated certificates, asset registers and waste documentation across the whole estate.

  • Retail and hospitality: EPOS and back-office systems collected store by store
  • Manufacturing, logistics and utilities: office, depot and operational IT
  • Healthcare and NHS: patient-data devices with full audit trails
  • Education: universities, colleges, schools and multi-academy trusts
  • Government and public sector: councils, agencies and housing providers

Free Nationwide Computer Recycling: Do You Qualify?

Most commercial collections across the UK are free, with no minimum quantity and no requirement for equipment to be working. Whether a collection is free depends on the quantity, type and condition of your equipment and your location. Where your redundant IT holds resale value, we may even pay you a rebate towards new hardware. If a job won’t cover our costs, we’ll quote clearly and upfront before anything is booked.

Common Questions About Nationwide Computer Recycling

Do you really cover the whole UK?

Yes. We collect from every mainland UK location, with dedicated coverage across the cities and counties listed above and full service everywhere else. Sites outside our named areas are collected on exactly the same terms, with the same certification and reporting.

Do IT disposal rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

Yes, and this catches many national organisations out. England abolished hazardous waste producer registration in 2016, but Wales still requires premises producing more than 500kg a year to register with Natural Resources Wales and use a premises code on consignment notes. Scotland calls it special waste under SEPA, with its own coded consignment notes and pre-notification. Northern Ireland has separate 2005 regulations under NIEA. We apply the right process and paperwork in each nation automatically.

Can you collect from several sites at once?

Yes. Multi-site collections are a core part of what we do. We schedule every location into one programme, apply the same process everywhere, and issue a single consolidated report with certificates for every device, rather than leaving you to reconcile paperwork from different suppliers.

How do I dispose of an old PC?

For a business, the correct route is to use a licensed waste carrier who erases or destroys the data, recycles the hardware under the WEEE Directive, and issues a certificate of destruction with waste transfer documentation. Deleting files, reformatting, or putting a PC in general waste does not meet your legal duty of care, and responsibility for any data left on the machine stays with your organisation.

Can I throw a broken laptop in the bin?

No. Laptops are waste electrical and electronic equipment, and their batteries make them hazardous waste, so they must never go in general waste or a skip. Businesses have a legal duty of care to use an authorised carrier and keep the paperwork. Being broken makes no difference to the rules, and none to us: we accept non-working equipment with no resale value.

Is there a minimum collection size?

No. We collect anything from a handful of devices at one office to thousands of assets across a national estate, with no minimum quantity.
